Florida Gonzaga University NCAA Basketball Tournament 2010 : Those hard-to-please fans should be satisfied, at least for one night. For the ninth time in 12 seasons, Gonzaga won a game in the NCAA tournament, as the Bulldogs defeated ninth-seeded Florida State, 67-60, on Friday night in the first round of the West Region. They will likely play top-seeded Syracuse if the Orange holds off Vermont in the nightcap at HSBC Arena.

After a furious second-half comeback, Florida State had the opportunity to cut Gonzaga's lead to two points in the game's final two minutes. Seminoles freshman Michael Snaer missed a pair of free throws, and the Bulldogs were fouled on the other end. Gonzaga star Matt Bouldin hit both of his free throws to give the Bulldogs a six-point cushion — enough to hold off Florida State.

Four Gonzaga starters scored in double digits, led by Bouldin, who finished with 17 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists.

Gonzaga dominated the first half, entering the locker room with a 35-19 advantage and leading by 18 points in the final minute. Florida State is known for its defense, but the Bulldogs made 52.2 percent of their first-half field goals and limited the Seminoles to 21.4 percent during the same period. Despite Florida State's oft-discussed size, Gonzaga finished the game with six more rebounds than the Seminoles.

Florida State methodically chopped away at the lead in the second half. The Seminoles never embarked on a major run, instead making stops and starting to hit shots at a greater frequency than in the first half. After hitting just one three-pointer in the first half, the Seminoles made five in the second half.

In the final minutes, though, it was the West Coast Conference team that appeared more poised than the ACC team. That could be attributed to Gonzaga's NCAA tournament experience. No player on the Seminoles' roster has won an NCAA tournament game. Gonzaga was in the NCAA regionals as recently as last season — and can reach one again if it wins on Sunday.
